Catie Murphy recommended the following exercise.

1. Read the following generic story event.

Robin ran up the stairs in the tower to the locked door. A wooden bird was beside it. Robin's heart pounded, chest tight with needing air. Robin poured water on the bird's head and it sang, making the door open. On the door's other side was a beautiful princess.

2. Rewrite this. Write it the way you would tell it, and go on with the story for a bit. Just a short, couple of hundred words, 10 minutes or so.
3. Go to the comments in her column and post your version.
4. Then read what other people have written.

Simple, right? Robin runs up the stairs, pours water on the bird, the bird sings, and the door opens. But go ahead and tell it your way.
